If you’re a ham and mushroom fan your going to love this creamy and delicious Skillet Ham and Mushroom Bread Casserole. It’s very similar to my Ham and Asparagus Bread Casserole I posted the other day. Except this skillet ham and mushroom bread casserole is prepared, baked AND served all in one pan. Which means less cleanup. And we all love that right?

What Is A Bread Casserole?

Bread casseroles are casseroles with a bread filling in a creamy sauce. They also usually include some type of add ins such as some type of meat and or vegetables. They are then topped with shredded cheese and baked in the oven until golden brown. You can pretty much add in anything you like and therefore they are perfect for using up leftovers and for sharing. They can be served at any mealtime or occasion.

For this recipe I chose ham and a mix of mushrooms (wild mushrooms and portobello mushrooms). I dice the ham and mushrooms into bitesize pieces.

How To Make This Skillet Ham and Mushroom Bread Casserole?

I always start by gathering all of the ingredients needed in a recipe and weighing and measuring everything before I start to cook or bake. This part is really important and key in keeping everything organized.

To make this skillet ham and mushroom bread casserole you start by cutting the ends of sandwich bread and slicing it into 4 cubes. Or 6 cubes if you want smaller.

Then in a 10-12 inch cast iron pan you combine sour cream, mayonnaise and cream of mushroom soup. Stir until melted together.

Then you stir in the ham and mushrooms. And season with salt and pepper.

Then you take it off the heat and mix in the bread cubes until they are soaked in the sauce.

Then you top the mixture with shredded cheese and bake in the oven until golden brown!

How To Serve This Skillet Ham and Mushroom Bread Casserole?

The reason I love bread casseroles is that they can be served for breakfast, lunch or dinner. And they are also often served at parties or gatherings as they are perfect for small/large groups.

Recipe Notes:

-You can use heavy cream to thin out the sauce if you think it’s too thick.

-You can use any type of bread you have. If you want to use up leftover loaf of bread instead of sliced sandwich bread, just cut the crust of and then tear it or slice it into bite sized cubes.

-I used 12 slices of bread, but it depends on the size of the skillet your using. You can start by adding 10 slices of bread and see if you think it needs more filling before adding the last 2 slices.

Substitutions:

Sour cream/mayonnaise- If you don’t have or want to use both sour cream and mayonnaise you could just double the amount of either one of them and use only sour cream or only mayonnaise.

Cream of mushroom soup- If you don’t like mushrooms or want to use another type of soup, you can use any type you want or have!

Ham – Instead of ham you could use bacon. Just slice it into bitesize pieces and pan fry it before adding to the creamy sauce.

Mushrooms – You can use any type of mushrooms in this recipe. White button mushrooms and chestnut mushrooms also work great.

Mozzarella cheese- You can use any shredded cheese in this recipe.
